Reducing translation costs

If you are not using computer-assisted translation (CAT), you are almost certainly wasting money on translation.

CAT tools are not like the translation engines you know from the Internet, with their obvious quality problems.

Among the benefits of CAT, translation memory tools in particular help you save costs. Translation memories save your original text and its translated equivalent in a database, and prompt the translator with perfect and fuzzy matches the next time the CAT tool encounters an identical or similar text string.

It’s easy to understand that you can save money by reusing translations you have already paid for!

However, there are challenges to solve before you can realize these savings – see here.

You can also use single-sourcing and structured documentation, e.g. DITA, to reduce your translation costs by giving you better control over what text you need to send to translation.
